We welcomed Ed and Carol back to WWLAB Monday, after 2 weeks away at the CMDA Conference at Brackenhurst Conference Center in Kenya. To see the joy and excitement on their faces as they shared their experiences with us here at WWLAB was such an encouragement.

Here are a few 'highlights':

According to Carol, '...it is always a privilege to serve and encourage the missionaries who attend from all over the world. To watch them pray, share, and fellowship together is such an encouragement. As faculty members share their passion, knowledge and experience with the missionaries, it is such a delight to witness'.

Ed reports '...35 missionaries attended my session, and asked many questions. I feel so blessed that God allows us to be part of His great Commission. I was busy the whole 2 weeks consulting, and trouble shooting with various missionaries from varying fields; from helping a missionary doctor who works by herself with no electricity in Sudan, to aiding doctors with 400 bed hospitals'.

God is doing a mighty work throughout the world!

Christian Medical and Dental Association

Ed and Carol packed their bags and headed off to Brackenhurst Conference Center in Kenya last Friday, for the 2012 CMDA Conference. The Conference runs from Feb. 6-16th. This is a wonderful Conference that gathers many medical and dental missionaries serving overseas to come together for encouragment and new learning venues.

Ed will be presenting a Seminar Wednesday, February 8th. We appreciate your prayers for him during that time. Here is an excerpt of what Ed will be sharing with the missionaries:

Ed Bos, MT (ASCP)
Appropriate Lab Technology for Developing World Settings Criteria for evaluation of procedures and resources for emerging country labs will be presented. The goal of the session is to assist attendees in making decisions appropriate to each specific situation. Discussion will include pros and cons of various test methodology, maintainability and life-cycle cost of equipment, support and training of staff, applications of technology
-Have a framework on which to evaluate the purchase of lab equipment for their situation.
-Gain access to suppliers of new technology, lab equipment, supplies, training and support.
-Apply "Life-cycle Costs" criteria to acquisition decisions.

The office is very quiet without Ed and Carol, we miss them, yet, we know that they are doing their part in fulfilling The Great Commission.

Where would we be without the help from our Volunteers?

Here is Marge, a volunteer that comes in to help package tourniquets and Rapid Tests. She always does it willingly and with a terrific smile :) Thank you, Marge!

Terry (Duncan Aviation), along with a group of his friends and co-workers, collects calendars for us throughout the year, and brings them in so they can be sent with supplies and equipment to the missionaries on the field. To date, he has collected over 130 calendars! As Peggy packs up boxes, she lovingly goes through the calendars and sends a couple along as a special gift to our missionaries.
Many thanks goes to Marge, Terry and Peggy for making life on field feel a little more like 'home'.

Africa Mercy Ship

John (one of our WWLAB volunteers) is currently on the Africa Mercy Ship in Togo. We have been providing lab training and equipment to the ship since Nov. 2008.

Recently we received an email from them thanking us for our involvement and support. Included in the email was a video clip showing some medical work that had been done recently. We would like to share that video with you.

Short-term crew can volunteer from two weeks to two years depending on the position and typically fill service roles or very specialized medical or technical positions.

Yes, we know that it is past the middle of January, and we are just getting around to wishing each of you a Happy New Year...please forgive us.
Life has been busy here at WWLAB. We have had many 'comings and goings' since mid-December and mid-January. Many boxes have been packed and shipped, new contacts have been writing and new trips are being planned. God is Good and He is Faithful.

Here are a few excerpts from emails that we have received:

"Thanks a million for all you did to get the scope done in time. Can’t believe the repair/turnover time at WWL! So awesome to get my scope back in action so quickly! Today I will be doing more FNA biopsies, and will be able to tell the patients that they will get their results in a timely manner! "

"I want to thank you for accompanying us to Angola to set up the chemistry lab. You have been instrumental in setting up the chemistry lab and beginning testing in CEML hospitals in Lubango, Kalukembe and Rio de Huila. Within the short time of a week, you managed to set up equipment, train local staff, and start performing tests. This has made a dramatic and positive impact on the patient care and operation of these mission hospitals now and for the future. Over the last few years, the local physicians in these 3 hospitals were severely limited by the lack of lab testing to guide treatment. As a result, patient care suffered. For a long time, we have tried to set up reliable testing through different commercial vendors with no success because of the high cost and lack of commitment to provide initial training and ongoing support. Worldwide Lab and your service has bridged the gap and enabled CEML to set these up successfully with reliable equipment and rapid testing at a lower cost.

I think that the service provided by Worldwide Lab and yourself are invaluable to many other mission hospitals in underdeveloped countries as they likely face similar situations as CEML. Many mission hospitals are struggling with lack of basic and reliable lab testing which we take for granted in Canada. The training that you provide is essential to ensure that testing is done properly, equipment is set up and maintained well, and quality control concepts are taught. I believe that with your knowledge, skill and dedication you will be able to help many more hospitals. May God bless your ministry."

WorldWide LAB Volunteer Dinner

November 15, 2011 WWLAB celebrated their annual Volunteer Dinner. It was a special evening of great food and fellowship as WWLAB thanked their many volunteers for their labor of love.
Here is the latest WWLAB staff picture. There are many more 'behind the scene' folks who are not pictured here. We are grateful for each individual pictured above, and for those who were unable to make it that evening.

CURE-Niamey, Niger, West Africa

In late Aug 2010, I had the privilege of going back to Niger to install the lab equipment in a new CURE children’s orthopedic hospital in the capital city of Niamey.

The boxes of equipment and supplies had been sent weeks earlier, so they had cleared customs and were waiting for me when I arrived.

It was a new facility still under construction, so everything was in the process of being made ready for the grand opening the next month.

The first day, I met the lab tech (“A”) who had recently been hired. As we unpacked the boxes together, we chatted about our faith and beliefs. We quickly discovered that we were brothers in Christ, even though we had come from such differing backgrounds. During our training times, we had many opportunities to share our spiritual journeys, and to learn more about each other.

The installation of equipment and training went very smoothly, as “A” was a fast learner and very keen to try new things. Since we had no “real” patients to work on (as the hospital was not yet officially open), we decided to take a 7 hour bus trip out to Galmi Hospital where I had served for over 11 years. While at Galmi, “A” was able to work alongside the lab staff there so I could assess his technical skills in a real working environment. He was warmly welcomed by the local staff, and was a great help in the laboratory.

On our return to Niamey a few days later, we completed the final set-up of the laboratory at CURE. I was able to meet his wife and family, and to see where he lived. Like all mission work, relationships are so important. God gave me the opportunity not only to train a Nigerien lab tech in new lab procedures, but also to get to know him personally and to mutually encourage one another spiritually.

Our last morning together was “English only”….at “A’s” request! He wanted to practice his English – which I think was much better than my French. I think we both learned a lot of French and English grammar during our time together.

Pray for “A” as he works in the lab each day. He not only draws the blood and receives specimens, but he also performs all the testing on the equipment supplied by WWLab. I still hear from him from time to time as we share prayer requests.

The ministry of WWLab Improvement goes far beyond lab equipment and training. As God gives opportunity, we can share His love with the people we come in contact with around the world. It is a joy to serve Him in this way. The impact of WWLab around the world is great. Eternity will reveal the magnitude of this impact.
